Questions on Valeda for AMD: Treatment Regimen

Regarding the treatment regimen, for those that are not familiar with Photobiomodulation (PBM) with the Valeda, currently it is 4 minutes and 10 seconds per eye, in a non-dilated pupil with 9 treatments over 3 to 5 weeks, not on consecutive days and not more than 3 times per week. The 4 minutes and 10 second consists of 35 seconds of yellow and near infrared light with an open eye, followed by 90 seconds of red light with a closed eye. This cycle is then repeated for a total treatment time of 4 minutes and 10 seconds. Then the fellow eye is then treated when bilateral treatment is planned. This yields a total treatment time of 8 minute and 20 seconds. This cycle of 9 treatments is then repeated 4 months after the first treatment with a third cycle of 9 4 months after initiation of the second. The second year replicates this. There are 6 cycles in 2 years with a total of 54 treatments.

  2. For those that have not seen the Valeda machine, here we have the left one showing the retinologist’s side and the right one showing the patient side during treatment.

  4. 24 month LIGHTSITE III data shows a +6.2 letter gain (p=0.0036) with a decreased incidence of geographic atrophy (GA) vs. sham of 24 % (p=0.007) after treatment with the Valeda light delivery device (the only FDA-authorized treatment to improve vision in Age-related Macular Degeneration).
