iron chelation to reduce iron in retina

My age related macular degeneration got markedly worse four years ago when I started to take 65 mg of iron daily for a blood condition. iI stopped taking it last year,my blood condition is now normal, but my AMD is still bad. I have read that excessive iron especially by suplements can make AMD worse.Do you think iron chelation therapy (a pill like Exjade)can reverse the accumulation of iron in my retina?

  1. Hi . Have you asked your doctor about iron chelation therapy? Unfortunately, we're not medical experts, so it really wouldn't be safe for anyone in this community to say whether you should go ahead with it. This seems like the kind of thing that should be monitored by a doctor to ensure that you don't end up with too little iron. That could bring on a whole new set of problems. I wish I had better answers. Gentle hugs. - Lori (Team Member)

    1. Thanks for the info. I took 65 mg iron suplements for about 5 years and stopped taking them a year ago. Google(AI) says that increase irevels of iron are found in the retinas of people with AMD and iron chelation, which binds to the iron and removes it, shows some potential for treatment. By the way a year after stopping the iron suplements my blood iron level is normal
