Our Brains Are Wired to See Faces Where There Are None

A lot of people can look at clouds or complex patterns and see faces there. I have been diagnosed with AMD and then with geographic atrophy (GA) and there is a fuzzy spot in my vision that interferes with recognizing faces and other visual functions. My brain wants to be entertained and so it makes up faces to fill this fuzzy spot. Sometimes they are even animated.

Seeing things that aren't really there

They are obviously figments of my imagination and damaged macula. It is sad to hear about people who are seeing things like this and wondering about their sanity.

To me it is obvious that this is neural noise that I am somehow turning into cartoon figures. they are not terribly vivid which is good. If they were vivid enough that they seemed real, that would be another story entirely. But I think I would still be able to tell the difference.
