Tips for exercising and finding interesting things to do at home

I can't use the gym anymore because I don't drive. I also can't find interesting hobbies at home besides reading. How can I keep fit and find some projects to keep me busy?

  1. Hi . Those are good questions. I often have to exercise at home because the nearest gym is 45 minutes away. I like to walk when the weather is good, but I also have light handweights I use for about 5 or 10 minutes a day. Sometimes, I do floor exercises as well, like crunches or leg lifts, on a yoga mat. There are lots of great videos available (often for free) that can lead you through at-home workouts. If you like to dance, Zumba can be a lot of fun.
What other things are you interested in besides reading? Lots of people like to scrapbook. Some garden in the summer while others do puzzles or sew or knit or paint. Making sourdough bread is a new fad these days. People grow their own bacteria at home and join Facebook groups to learn more about how to perfect the process.
I hope you get input from others in the community. This could be really exciting for you. There are so many things you can try. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. It’s a new world to say the least. I do have a gym in the community I am living in. It is in walking distance. I try and do about 7000 steps a day. I’m 83. If you know your living area well you can get in some exercise by walking around the area. I use audio books and it has been a challenge getting use to not turning the page. I like a book. Not seeing friends and family is difficult to deal with and gave that up for now. Hobbies for me is impossible at the moment. I love to read, photography, and making jewelry. I try but just can’t bring it together anymore. Would appreciate any ideas for hobbies.
Thank you for any suggestions that you might come up with.

    1. I like jewelry making to but had to give it up. I use Amazon Audible for books now too, it's different for sure but I' m getting to enjoy it more and I find that some books work better on Audio than others. I enjoy short stories myself, and one title I really really liked was: You Like It Darker by none other than Steven King. It's not the usual Steven King, I think you would enjoy it. There is also Joy Williams books on Audible.

  3. Unfortunately, my hands don't work well for knitting or jewelry-making. However, I'm about to go on Ebay and try to sell some of the stuff that we don't need. I also collect small houseplants. My bathroom has become a plant nursery!

    1. Now I'm really inspired! I've ordered a recumbent bicycle from Amazon because I don't walk outside in cold weather and I don't drive. We go on.

    2. Wonderful! I hope you enjoy it and get lots of use from it. - Lori (Team Member)

  4. If you live in a nice walkable community, walking is very good especially if you have someone to walk with. I have a ski machine in my bedroom, I really need to make time to use it! Maybe you could find a local museum or some gallery you could volunteer at. I used to be a docent at an art gallery a Peace museum also and I sold things to profit the gallery.
I met a lady at the grocery store and she volunteers at a church resale shop. I loved volunteering, check out local hospitals or zoos or whatever is out there that interests you personally.
