Low Vision Centers and Prismatic Lenses

I see opticians advertised on the internet that have devices that they can prescribe that help people with AMD . I am particularly interested in prismatic lenses that direct your focus to non-damaged portions of the retina. Is this hype or helpful? Has anyone been to a low vision center or bought a pair of prismatic glasses?
