GA and wet AMD in same eye

About a year and a half ago two retinal specialist suggested I start Izervay injections because I had developed GA. I agreed and had no issues. A year ago I changed health insurance and had to get a new retinal specialist. He tried to discourage me from continuing the injections. He talked to me about the risks. Since I had a lot of trust in my prior retinal specialist, I told him that I wanted to continue. This month I was told I now have wet macular degeneration in that eye. I received an injection of Eyelea. The RS felt it necessary to tell me three times during the visit that he warned me about the risks related to Izervay. He does not want me to continue with Izervay injections. I am leaning in that direction. If you’ve had a similar experience, please share it with me.

  1. Hi . That's such a hard call. There is no way to know for certain whether the injections helped and you might have developed wet MD sooner without them or whether the injections triggered it. Have you considered a second opinion? Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Thank you, Lori, the medical plan I’m in doesn’t allow second opinions. If a patient wants another opinion they have to change doctors. However, yesterday I saw an ophthalmologist (I neede an injection and no RS was available. Unfortunately, this ophthalmologist said that once GA also gets wet all GA treatments are stopped. I know that is incorrect but I wasn’t going to bother correcting him.
I am going to approach my usual RS with a question, “is the atrophy expanding toward the fovia or periphery?.” I think that might help me decide whether to continue Izervay injections.

    1. That sounds like a good plan. Let us know what you decide, if you don't mind. I'll be sending lots of positive vibes your way. - Lori (Team Member)

    2. Thank you so much.
