Cataract Surgery When You Have Macular Degeneration

Has anyone here had cataract surgery while also living with macular degeneration? I’ve heard that removing the cataract can sometimes improve overall clarity, but the underlying retinal changes from macular degeneration may still limit vision.

  1. Hi . What you've heard is correct, as far as I know. Cataract surgery will only resolve the issues caused by the clouded cataracts. Many people do find though that their cataracts were significantly impacting their vision. So, they see a lot of improvement after surgery. Everyone is so different that it's hard to know what the outcome will be for you. I wish I had better answers. Are you having surgery soon? Warmly, Lori (Team Member)

  2. I had blurry vision in my left eye which I thought was due to AMD, as that is the eye that sees wavy lines and in which
I believe the AMD is more advanced. I had cataract surgery in that eye a month ago, and it helped my blurry vision a lot. The world is definitely brighter. But I see a prominent black spot in my central vision at night. I am told the surgery made my vision better and now I can see the area damaged by the slowly progressing AMD more clearly. Ugh. I am postponing the other eye for now, my vision doesn’t seem as bad in that eye. The surgeon says I should do the other eye at some point, as it will let more light into my eye, and I’ll see better.

    1. I'm glad to hear you've had some improvement even if it does make the AMD damage more obvious. I hope you can get by a while longer before doing the other eye. Sending the best of all wishes your way. - Lori (Team Member)

    2. OregonGram. same with me. ..see clearer but can see the GA so prominent now. Will start Syfovre in that eye now

  3. I just got my cataracts removed my vision hasn't been this great since I was in my 20s. I am 78 years old, and been wearing glasses since I was 8 years old. I can now do what ever I wish without glasses except read fine print. I cried the first morning that I was able to read my Study Bible again. Before my cataracts were removed I couldn't read my Bible with my glasses. Now I can strain and read it without glasses but I do use over the counter reading glasses. I have my first vision exam since my cataracts were removed this coming Monday. I know I will need at least reading glasses and more than likely glasses to balance my vision as my left eye, my dominant eye, is better than my right eye. For a few days to a couple of weeks I felt naked. Now I must say my surgery was the old way of removing cataracts. I didn't have the modern lazer surgery. My eye doctor said that it is possible that the Lazer surgery could disturb my macular degeneration.

  4. a minute agoMy eye exam today went great. My eyes are looking great. My vision is such I only need reading glasses. I go back this Friday for a macular degeneration check up. The eye doctor mentioned again today about removing my tear duct plugs. I am not ready to commit to that yet. I have a prescription for glasses for reading but I am going to the VA clinic tomorrow morning to order my glasses.reactions

    1. How awesome! What a huge relief this must all be for you. Let us know how Friday's appointment goes, if you don't mind. Thinking of you. - Lori (Team Member)
