At what point did you decide to start seeing a Retina Specialist?

Did you start when you were first diagnosed in the early stage or did you wait until you were getting close to or once you were in the intermediate stage?

  1. I never hear if that before joined this group.

    1. Hi Karen,
I decided to see a retina specialist shortly after my diagnosis in the early stage. Although my symptoms were mild, I wanted expert guidance from the beginning to monitor any changes closely and stay ahead of progression. Retina specialists can often detect subtle developments that general eye exams might miss, and it gave me peace of mind knowing I was taking a proactive approach to protecting my vision.

      1. I started seeing a retina specialist soon after my early-stage diagnosis to establish a baseline and closely monitor any changes. Early visits allowed for detailed imaging, like OCT scans, so even subtle changes could be detected and addressed before the condition progressed.

        1. Thank You for sharing your stories

I am at the beginning of early stage Dry AMD (from my May visit) and see my optometrist (that diagnosed me 6 yrs ago with Dry AMD) every 6 months and he does the OCT scan at every visit and so he is able to tell me if it has progressed to wet and so would need to see the Retina Specialist for the shots or if the dry has progressed into another stage.

I read that the scientists think that the Areds/vitamins doesn't help those in the early stage with delaying progression but my optometrist disagrees with that and has me taking them and each visit he make sure that I am taking them.

My health insurance pays for his eye exams every 6 months.

It has been my plan to start seeing a Retina Specialist once I got to the intermediate stage so your stories about seeing the RS in the early stage gives me a lot to think about about seeing the RS now.
