AMD progression

One day back in 2015 I suddenly noticed that if I covered my right eye the edges of car number plates adopted a slant. The right eye seemed ok. My optician referred me to the eye clinic at my local hospital who diagnosed dry AMD initially in my left eye. Over the course of time the AMD in my left eye seems to have improved whilst I have since developed AMD in my right eye with symptoms similar to those initially experienced in my left eye. A recent eye test showed that my AMD was stable and in fact the vision in my left eye had actually improved! Could it be that the left eye is compensating for my right eye? The optician couldn’t explain it. I don’t follow a special diet although we eat a lot of salads and my wife is fairly liberal with the garlic and olive oil! I also take a daily Macushield capsule (when I remember). One habit I have observed for a number of years is to eat a daily orange before going to bed. Maybe this has helped?

  1. Hi . So little is known about what really causes macular degeneration and what might slow progression, so I wouldn't doubt that something you ate or did might have helped. What great news! I hope your right eye remains healthy and that left eye gets no worse or at least progresses very slowly. Best wishes. - Lori (Team Member)

  2. Thank you Lori for those kind comment! I have another strange story to relate. My optician told me that he had been suffering from
Wet AMD in both eyes for a number of years. About 3 years ago he was involved in a serious road accident which led to him being hospitalised for several months and left him partially disabled. The one good thing that came out of this was that his AMD was completely cured!! How strange is that?

    1. Wow! That is strange, but very cool. I'm glad at least one good thing came out of his accident. I really hope that one day someone stumbles upon a cure. You never know. - Lori (Team Member)
