In Late January 2024, My Vision Started Going...

In late January 2024, my left eye vision started looking like a fun-house mirror, but it was not fun.

A referral to a retina specialist

I made an appointment with my ophthalmologist and thought, "OK, this a normal part of aging."

Halfway through the appointment, the ophthalmologist stopped and said, "I have to refer you to a retina specialist — you have wet AMD."

Seeing the retina specialist

My appointment was 2 days later, and I was terrified — all I could think of were the horror movies where the person is terrorized with a large needle pointed at the eye. But it was NOTHING like that.

The doctor explained what would happen — numbing agent as drops and then injection and then the medication. I did not see the injections and the doctor was gentle.

After the injection

Afterwards, my eye was very sensitive to any air movement (fan, AC), so I kept my sunglasses on for 24 hours. By the next day, it had calmed, and I went to work with a very bloodshot eye.

The injections were 4 weeks apart and then 6, and now 8 weeks apart. The doctor told me that it would eventually affect my right eye — but so far so good.

Preparing for the future

My husband is prepared that one day I may not be able to drive. He takes me to the injection appointments.

Years ago I made a flippant statement after visiting the Charles Hosmer Morse museum in Orlando, FL (they have the largest collection of privately-owned Tiffany glass) that "I can go blind now because I have seen the most beautiful creations." I regret saying that now, but time marches on.
