Macular degeneration - The combined cost of drugs and treatment/consultation

I have been newly diagnosed with wet AMD and am trying to establish what a treatment cost would typically be. I see that there is information on the drug costs (Avastin etc) however there is no clear information on what each visit to the Ophthalmologist will cost. Any insight (no pun intended 😊) would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

  1. we're glad you found our Community now that you have been newly diagnosed with wet macular degeneration. I hope your ophthalmologist has given you an estimate of your costs, but I understand you would like to know what treatments typically cost. I'm in Australia, so I can't help you here, and I presume you are in the USA, because the setup is different, even in Canada. I hope someone will share what their expenses are with you. Best wishes, Wendy, Advocate.

    1. I can understand your concern about drug costs to treat wet AMD. My Mom had wet AMD and her treatment was covered in full by her traditional Medicare plus supplement. She received treatment for several years prior to her death and never had a co-pay. My sister has wet macular degeneration in both eyes and is currently receiving treatment. Like my mom, she has Medicare and a supplement plan that covers her cost in full. I had a good friend with wet macular degeneration that received injections. He had a Medicare advantage plan which is very different from the traditional Medicare. He had a $50 co-pay for each visit to his retinal specialist. I have not had any personal experience with anyone receiving treatment with private insurance. I would think if you had a discussion with the billing department at the practice where you receive care they should be able to give you a good idea of any cost you may have to pay.
