COVID vaccine and macular degeneration

Does anyone know if there are any negative correlations between the vaccine and macular degeneration? I currently have dry macular degeneration, could the vaccine
aggravate my condition?

Thank you

  1. Thank you for your question about the COVID vaccine and macular degeneration. What we do know is the virus is worse if you have macular degeneration. https://www.macular.org/2021/02/05/study-indicates-amd-patients-are-at-higher-risk-of-covid-19-complications
This article discusses the vaccine and known side effects. I hope these two articles can guide your decision about taking the vaccine. As always, your doctor can. best answer whether the vaccine is best for you. Best wishes, Sharon Moore Advocate

    1. what about Stargardt’s disease. This would be different as the patients would be younger and it’s a genetic disease.

    2. You ask an important question that unfortunately i am not qualified to answer since I am not a medical professional. While age related macular degeneration patients are at higher risk for severe complications with Covid, I could not find any articles indicating that to be true for Stargardt’s patients. I also couldn’t find any information contraindicating taking the vaccine. I have AMD and took the vaccine with no problem. If you haven’t already discussed this with your doctor, it would be a good idea since they know your specific case. Best wishes as you make a decision best for you, Sharon Moore Advocate

  2. Sorry I failed to post the link to known side effects with the vaccine. https://www.allaboutvision.com/coronavirus/covid-vaccine-side-effects-vision/

    1. I have had both my Covid-19 vaccines, no reaction for eyes at all on either shot Just the sore arm and a bit tired for a day or two.

      1. I'm glad to hear that your vaccinations well and that your side effects were minimal. Wendy, Advocate.

    2. Thank you all for the feedback, I will definitely check out the vaccine links.
