Silicone bubble in my eye

Last March, when I received my injection for Macular Degeneration, I got a large silicone bubble in that eye. It impacted my vision and I was extremely sensitive to light. The bubble is smaller and it has floated down a bit so it isn’t an annoying as before. In September I saw a new retinologist who said that the bubble will remain in my eye for the rest of my life since it remained so long and didn’t float down or to the back of my eye.
My question is…Is that normal? Does this happen to other people? Was my doctor at fault?
I now get specially ordered silicone free injections.

  1. I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. I have read about silicone in some syringes used for injections. And I have read about these bubbles. What type of medication are you having in your shots? Wendy, Patient Leader.

    1. Avastin

      1. there is a lot of information online about this. It seems it can happen with any anti-vegf medication when a syringe with silicone is used. You aren't the only one it has happened to. I'm glad you are getting silicon-free syringes now. Wendy, Patient Leader.

    2. Have you heard if anyone had the bubble remain in their vision for over 10 months. The doctors say that it will never go away if it hasn’t moved to the back of my eye yet. That is my issue, this bubble that is affecting my vision.

      1. I haven't heard anyone else mention it here. Have you asked your doctor if it can be surgically removed? Wendy, Patient Leader.

    3. Surgery is too invasive and can lead to many other problems. It is not recommended.

      1. thanks for responding. I thought that might be the case, unfortunately. I hope the bubble gets a bit smaller for you or moves further out of the way. Wendy, Patient Leader.
