Pain after shots

What do you do for the pain/irritation after the shot? I am new to MD and had my first shot Thursday. The following 7 to 8 hours were pure misery with the "scratchy" irritation. Any suggestions?

  1. I'm sorry to hear you had this misery with irritation after your first shot, but I'm glad you found this community. Welcome! Many people comment that it is the Betadine which is used as an antiseptic before the shot, which causes them problems afterwards. They ask for extra rinsing after the injection to remove as much Betadine as possible. Some community members also report that they use lubricating drops at home to ease this irritation. But these drops should only be used with the doctor's approval, because there is always a risk of infection after these injections. For that reason, some community members use sterile, single-use drops. But it is a matter for your doctor. Can you contact him/her before your next injection to let them know about the discomfort you experienced this time? Wendy, Patient Leader.

    1. Thank you for your response. Yes, I will call the Doc about a week before my next shot and see if I can get a better rinse before leaving the office. He also gave me some Retaine eye drops to use, but I don't think enough. I will ask him if there is an Rx for pain. The nano second it took for the shot was not bad. But the hours after!!! I felt like I was rubbing Jalapino peppers in my eye!!! I got some more Retaine and I found a mild ice pack helped some.

      1. at least the shot itself didn’t hurt! But you shouldn't have to experience all that discomfort afterwards. I hope you can get extra rinsing next time. Please let us know how you go. Best wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.

    2. Thank you for your reply. I am hoping to resolve this issue since it will be an ongoing treatment.

      1. I wish you well at your next appointment and hope you will update us, hopefully with some success regarding less irritation. Wendy, Patient Leader.
