Glaucoma and Atrophic Macular Degeneration

Two days ago I went to a new ophthalmologist for my semi-annual visit expecting the usual result that glaucoma in both my eyes was stable, as it has been for almost thirty years. But there was something else lurking in both my eyes, something called atrophic macular degeneration. I knew a bit about it because my stepfather suffered from it forty years ago. So here I am, very glad that I found you all, to learn and share our mutual journey.

  1. we're very sorry to hear about your diagnosis - it must have come as a bit of a shock to you. We're glad you found our community. There's lots of information and support to be found here. Did your doctor discuss diet with you? And how about AREDs2 supplements and using an Amsler Grid. Were they mentioned? Wendy, Advocate.

    1. Thank you for reaching out. I purchased the AREDS2 plus mutlivitamin and I am using an Amsler Grid. I was a bit overwhelmed by the high doses of the vitamins and decided to ease into the regime. I did some reading about the AREDS/AREDS2 studies and I'm optimistic the vitamins may help slow down the progression of the disease. I take one vitamin in the evening and so far no adverse effects. After a couple of weeks, I'll try taking the two dose regime. Emotionally, I'm pretty good. My best to you all.

      1. I'm pleased to hear you know about the Amsler Grid and the AREDS2 supplements. I was concerned about the high level of zinc in them, but as I have macular degeneration on both sides of the family, my doctor really wanted me to take them. I have been taking the full dose for a number of years now, and have no side-effects that I know of. Please get back to us if you have any questions at all. Wishing you all the best, Wendy, Advocate.

    2. Thank you very much for the information. It's encouraging. Take care.
