Dry and wet macular degeneration at the same time

My eye which has had dry macular degeneration for a decade recently developed the wet form as well. Now that I receive injections for the wet form, my specialist never mentions the dry form (which I know is still there.) If my vision seems to deteriorate, I don't know if it's from the dry or the wet macular degeneration. Is anyone in the same boat? Does your specialist talk about both issues to you at your appointment? Wendy, Patient Leader.

  1. I hope you get answers. Is it common to have both in the same eye? Thinking about you and hope your eye gets better ❤️

    1. thank you for your good wishes. My previous specialist told me that all wet macular degeneration begins as the dry form. Some people don't notice they have the dry form first, and aren't diagnosed with it. The first thing they might notice is when it develops into the wet form, and they get diagnosed with that. The dry form doesn't "go away" when wet develops. It is still there. I think that is one of the reasons that sometimes sight still deteriorates while people are having injections for the wet form. The dry form is still there. I just wonder why my doctor never mentions how the dry is progressing. Perhaps it's because we don't have the injections for the advanced dry form in Australia yet, so there is no treatment for it here just now. Some people in our group in the United States are having injections for both forms in the same eye. I hope you are going well in this New Year. Warm wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.

  2. Wow, I'm going to ask my doctor if I have the dry form, he never mentioned it. You have such amazing knowledge of this disease. I wish you great health and happiness in the new year ❤️

    1. I will be interested to hear what your doctor says on this topic. I'm not a medical professional (as you know) but I'm sharing what my specialist told me. Best wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.

  3. I venture to say as patients living with this disease we know as much and sometimes more than doctors..lol .. I'll be sure to let you know what he says.... Because I'm going to ask. And if he says I have it.. I'm asking why he never told me. As I travel this journey of many diseases I ask a lot of questions. 🧐

    1. questions are good! I hope you get the answers. I always rank mine before I go in, in case I don't get them all answered 😀 Wendy, Patient Leader.

  4. - thanks for bringing up this topic. I never knew you could have both at the same time. I just started with Izervay for my dry AMD 4 months ago when my vision became noticeably worse. I will be interested in hearing what your doctor says about which form of AMD might be causing any deteriorating vision. Because the mechanism of GA and wet AMD are a bit different (build up of cellular waste products in GA vs leaking blood vessels in wet) perhaps they can identify vision loss as it relates to those different causes. But I can only guess! Sending good vibes your way and I will be looking forward to more info on this topic.

    1. thanks for your interest and good vibes! We shall see (no pun intended 😄) when I go back in a few weeks. How often are you having Izervay and have there been any discernible results yet? Wendy, Patient Leader.
