Myopic Macular Degeneration

I have MMD in one eye. If I have cataract surgery in that eye, is it possible that my MMD could get worse from the cataract surgery? Also, if I have the surgery in my good eye, could I develop Macular Degeneration quicker in that eye? I understand if you have Macular Degeneration in one eye you can develop it in the other eye. I don't want to quicken the process.

  1. You raise some good questions. I would want to have a conversation with the doctor you see for MMD. Cataract surgery has some risks. Good luck making your decision.

    1. I havedry AMD, had a cataract operation on both eyes since then my vision is worse. If I could do it all over I wouldn't have the operation.

      1. Please say why.

      2. I am so sorry to hear that your vision has worsened. Unfortunately, cataracts lead to blindness if left untreated, so it's a hard choice. Gentle hugs. -Lori (Team Member)

    2. I have MMD in both eyes and have recently had cataract surgery on both. I had varying advice on the risks from a number of NHS consultants but asked to speak to the head of department at my clinic. He allayed my fears and performed both surgeries successfully. I’m now free of contact lenses and high prescription spectacles after 50 years! Not solved my MMD but have been discharged from retinal clinic and life is much easier.
I’d recommend getting as much info as you can on which to base you’d decision and wish you the very best.

      1. I have both wet and dry..one in each eye. I had catract surgery...it was a waste of time and money for me as my macular degerneration has progressed. You might have one lens replaced and see how you do. My consent form for cataract surgery listed that it might worsen MD. It's a crap shoot! Darnnit!
