Do I have AMD? Glaucoma? Or Both?

For a few years now I've been diagnosed with AMD, but also with Glaucoma. The symptoms seem overlap themselves...or not. I don't see the wavy lines I read about from AMD sufferers, but I see black clouds of various sizes werever I look, at least in one eye. Plus both eyes are always blurry and burning.
I was also diagnosed with Glaucoma (not enough one, had to be punshed with both!). And in general my vision is being drastically reduced.
Are any of you also seeing these black clouds? When I mention this to either specialist they don't answer. Perhaps I need to find a more competent AMD and Glaucoma?

  1. having amd and glaucoma is a double whammy. My mother had both and she was very careful to remember to use her drops for glaucoma. I have dry amd and see a couple of dark, blurry spots in my vision, which my RS calls scotoma. They show up when I look at the Amsler Grid, too. Luckily for me they aren't right in the middle of my central vision, so they don't worry me too much. I don't have glaucoma, but I have cataracts in both eyes and recently changed eye specialists. I think it's important to have confidence in your specialist, and to have them answer your questions. Warm wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.

    1. , thank you for telling me your and your mom's little AMD story, glad it doesn't seem advanced! As to cataracts I've had them some years ago (very simple) and had the wonderful surprise of not needing reading glasses anymore! But...it lasted only around 3 or some years, then back to needing them. Better than nothing though lol! I hope you find a great cataract ophthalmologist and experience this great extra benefit.

    2. I'm glad to hear your cataract operation went well. That is encouraging. I worry a bit about having mine done, only because of the macular degeneration. I think my new RS is skilled with amd and cataracts so I have confidence in him. Warm wishes Wendy, Patient Leader.

  2. Wendy, the cataracts are the simplest of all surgeries. Easier than teeth extractions lol! Please choose a very comptent surgeon who understands AMD. I wish you the very best! 😀

    1. Thanks . I think my new Retinal Specialist is one of the best. He is at the top of his field in amd in Australia. He explained to me that he is experienced in cataract removal as well, and that I should get someone who knows about both, even if it isn't him, so he wasn't just trying to upsell me 😊 It'll probably happe next year some time. Warm wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.

    2. I have had both. Would rather have teeth pulled.

  3. Oh how wonderful you found the right doctor specialized in both cases! I wish he were in my town in USA. Best luck to you! 😀

    1. Thanks . All the best to you, too. Wendy, Patient Leader.

  4. I've had glaucoma for over 20 years. Drops at present keeping it in check. The dry AMD I've had for over 4 years. Nothing can be done for it except salads and vitamins.

    1. thank you for sharing your experience with both glaucoma and AMD. My son had a laser procedure for glaucoma that worked well. It lasted about 3 years. Now he is back on drops. I am attaching a link for lifestyle changes that can slow the progression. https://maculardegeneration.net/lifestyle-changes/
