I have just been diagnosed with macular degeneration, am I going to go blind?

  1. You are in the right place! We have a wonderful community of people here who can relate and help sort through all of the 'hard stuff' this disease can bring. We all progress at different rates and respond to treatments uniquely. With macular degeneration, most with vision loss only lose some or all of their central vision. Though that can feel scary as well, it gave me comfort to know that I'd still be able to see some things if worse came to worst. If you look at the menu tab at the top of our page, you will find many great resources and information to help you understand this disease better. If you have any questions or would like to share, please feel free. We are so glad you're here and are always happy to help!

    1. thank you for your help...my doctor said I would not go blind ...I am diagnosed with dry macular degeneration but it is getting worse and I feel almost blind now...so do not understand why she said this...I wonder how it progresses and if it can be stopped?

      1. my new Retinal Specialist said the same to me. People with dry macular degeneration usually retain their peripheral vision, so they don't become completely blind. How long is it since you were diagnosed and what stage are you at? There are new treatments for the advanced stage. Were you recommended to take AREDS2 supplements? I'm attaching a link to lifestyle changes which may slow the progression. https://maculardegeneration.net/lifestyle-changes. Best wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.

      2. just checking in to see how you're going. There are now a couple of new treatments for the advanced stage of dry macular degenereation. Some community members have started on them. I'm attaching a link to the latest treatment called Izervay. It might be worth discussing with your doctor if you haven't already. https://maculardegeneration.net/izervay.
