Change in Myopic Wet MD

I have had myopic macular degeneration for five years. Recently, my symptoms changed. On my phone or while reading small type I see broken letters and sometimes distorted faces. Doctor says it is because my retina is being stretched and there is nothing he can do. Sought a second opinion and doctor said there is a surgery to possibly correct this but it has many complications. Said to wait and see. Anyone have any experience with this? And, what did you do?

  1. I just wanted to acknowledge your comment and let you know we feel for you. It appears no-one in our Community has been in this situation. It seems like a very good idea that you got a second opinion. I'm sure you've done some research on that operation. I wonder if it is the sort of operation that can be done down the track if necessary. Wendy, Patient Leader.

    1. Thank you for responding. It is hard enough getting injections for my wet macular degeneration but this is definitely a new wrinkle. The injections have most definitely worked for the bleeds in that eye. But, being so nearsighted in that eye caused an additional problem I never anticipated. Hopefully, there are new procedures for this down the road that will keep it from getting worse.

  2. Hi! I am happy to post your questions to our Facebook page to see if those on our page may have a similar experience. I'm hoping we can get you some answers! Thank you for being here. Best, Abby (Team Member).

    1. I have had myopic degenerative for over 10 years. Only in my left eye but it has gone down hill very fast this year in spite of repeated Eylea injections. Since I have had this everything is wavy. A month ago I had an eye stroke in the same eye, it was dark for a week then started getting lighter. But vision is basically gone. The ophthalmologist I saw said my eye is thrashed and I am lucky if I have any vision left. And now my good eye is showing beginning signs. I think a lot of us would love to hear about an operation for this. Not for my bad eye but maybe there is a future for my good eye. Have an appt with a neuro ophthalmologist in a few months because they don’t know what caused my eye stroke but I will
Ask her about any new procedures. Unfortunately you must keep up with the injections even when your vision isn’t that great. Mine are very stretched out which causes a lot of distortion. Different in everyone, sadly. Take care of your self and again let us know and I will do the same.

      1. thank you for sharing your experience with myopic macular degeneration. I hope they find the cause for the stroke in your eye and can prevent further occurrences. Do you have a good support system to help you cope with the Vision loss? Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

    2. I have myopic macular D. and just yesterday had my first retinal specialist visit. Have been having.the same problems reading plus color contrast problems, can't make sense of pictures on TV or Facebook that are evening or night scenes...etc. Right eye is primarily having the worst problems.
I have scar tissue.on the retina caused by the vitreous detachments I had over 20 years ago. This is a wrinkling of the epithelial layer and seems the PRIMARY cause of.current problems. There is a shot and also surgery that could help but because of several side effects, he did nor recommend either at this time. I heartily agreed. I'd rather take what vision I can keep than risk total blindness. High myopes are already high risk for retinal detachments.
Do have that second doctor consult!

      1. a second opinion is a good idea in my opinion. I have similar problems with contrast. The accessibility features on my iPhone and iPad are very helpful. Are you satisfied with your current doctor or seeking a second opinion? Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader
