Worry Discussion Board

What are your biggest worries with macular degeneration?

Use this as a "venting session" and an opportunity to get things off your chest. This is a safe space!

  1. That I will go blind. My aunt did and my mom did in one eye. My sister progressed from dry to wet very quickly.

    1. I'm sorry to hear this. When were you diagnosed? Has your specialist mentioned the rate at which you're progressing? Best, Abby (Team member).

  2. Not worried at all. All I do now for my eyes is take a lot of eye vitamins. I can't do anything more than that...whatever happens, happens. I only use the grid once a month or so b/c I refuse to be paranoid about it.

    1. I'm really glad to hear that you've found something that works for you right now! Please continue to let us know how you're feeling. Best, Abby (Team member).

  3. I worry about it turning to wet and losing my eyesight. I do take the vitamins the eye doctor told me to and also bought a pair of sunglasses uva uvb 400 that wrap around and block all light out on the sides. My eyes feel better protected but I noticed at night the oncoming traffic on the freeways hurts my eyes. I figure I will mention this to my Dr at me appt next month and see what he says.

    1. I understand how you feel. I worry about mine turning wet, and I think my previous specialist said I am at high risk of this happening. My current specialist said my amd is hereditary. My dad had wet and my mother had dry, so I wonder which one I'm going to take after? I think a lot of us have trouble with the lights from oncoming cars, if we drive at night at all. It will be interesting to hear what your doctor says about that. Do you use an Amsler Grid to check your vision between appointments? Wendy, Patient Leader.

    2. you can purchase night vision glasses that are helpful with glare. They have a yellow tint. They are also good when driving in fog. Cataracts if present make nighttime glare worse. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

  4. I have never heard of an Amsler Grid. My doctor never mentioned it. I see him the end of June.

    1. an Amsler Grid is a little chart that you can look at between doctor's visits to check if your sight has changed. If you notice a change, doctors encourage you to make an appointment as soon as possible. Here is a link to further information. https://maculardegeneration.net/vision-tests. Your doctor should be able to give you one. Best wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.
