Wet to dry AMD ?

In early March 23, I was diagnosed with wet AMD in both eyes and was advised by my ophthalmologist to start VEGF injections into both eyes. In the last few weeks, my wet AMD in my left eye has changed to dry AMD and the right eye is also improving with no new growth of blood vessels or leaks. (Wet AMD but no CNVM) I have not been started on the injections and have been told to have my eyes tested again in 3 months time. Can wet AMD improve to dry ? I am totally confused by what has happened. Has anyone experienced anything similar.?

  1. I am not an expert but I have not heard of this happening to anyone and did not find any research on the subject. Have you seen a retinal specialist yet? If not you may want to consider seeing one for a definitive diagnosis. Be sure and ask questions until you understand your situation. I find it helpful to write my questions down. 1. yours is indeed an unusual situation, but one piece of information might help solve the puzzle. My doctor told me that wet macular degeneration almost always starts off as dry macular degeneration, even if the dry went undiagnosed originally. This article from the Mayo Clinic confirms it. Perhaps your wet amd hasn't "turned" to dry, but the dry was already there first. Now that the wet amd in that eye has cleared up for the moment, the issue is the dry amd. This would be a good question to ask your doctor as I'm not a medical person. 1. Hi ChrisP, We are having similar experiences. TODAY! my Dr said that I might be going from Dry to Wet AMD, because of a bulge in my retina.

The background, 74yo, About 7 years ago, I noticed that straight lines, in tall buildings, telephone poles and street lights looked broken in the middle. A sharp displacement of the line. I went to a specialist and they diagnosed Dry, gave me an Amsler grid and told me to take vitamins. They condition stayed stable, until 4 years ago when I couldn't read highway signs, the letters were all jumbled up. 2 years later I noticed while playing golf that I would see 2 golf balls, 2 birds and 2 planes in the sky. I changed to a liquid, vitamin called VISION 20/20 and after 2 years the broken poles and building were hardly noticeable. The Dr. said that my Dry was gone, but not be be too happy, because it will come back. A year later, now it has come back as Wet or shall I say almost Wet.

The bulge, I mentioned earlier could be possibly new tissue that has grown over the old in my retina or a blood vessel that is leaking. The later is the most troubling. Recommendation is to come back in 30 days for another look and possibly Anti-VEGF injections. I hope this confirms some of what you have experienced.

        1. thanks for sharing your unique experience with macular degeneration. I have a form of double vision called ghosting. I see a second image superimposed over the original. It’s distracting but I can still drive in familiar areas. I hope your doctor gets it all sorted out at your next visit. Keep us posted. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader
