Wet AMD Worsening When A1c Levels Go Down?

Has any one ever noticed that when their A1c levels go down their wet AMD gets worse. At first I attributed it to the medications I was taking for diabetes but after being on four different classes of medications to reduce my A1c now I'm thinking it is not the medication but the fact that my A1c level is lower. It seems that when my A1c level was around 7.5 or higher the bleeding in my eye cleared up. When the reading is around 6.2 the blood vessels start leaking again! Of course the doctors don't believe it but I was wondering if anybody else noticed this.

  1. I don’t have an answer for why your wet MD appears to worsen when your A1c is lower. Before retirement, I was a nurse and managed a large diabetes clinic. The doctors encouraged patients to lower their blood glucose levels to avoid diabetic retinopathy. I am sure both you and your doctors are mystified by your response to lower blood glucose levels seeming to worsen rather than improve your vision. I hope you and your doctors are able to determine the best course for you. Hopefully other community members with both diabetes and AMD will address your question. Best wishes, Sharon Moore advocate
