The FDA has approved the first treatment for advanced dry macular degeneration (geographic atropy)

For the first time, a treatment for geographic atrophy, the advanced form of dry macular degeneration, has been approved by the FDA. It involves regular eye injections. If you have GA, what are your thoughts or concerns about this new treatment?

  1. At my last visit, with my retinaologist, in September 2022 , he told me , I was put on his patient list for the injections of Syfovre when available. I read the literature about the trials. Sounds good right? The slowing of damage of this nasty component of dry AMD. But what are the conterdictions and negative future possibilities from this treatment? Also, many of us who are considered for this injection are dependent on Medicare approval for our insurance to help pay for an obviously expensive treatment. Wait and see for me, but am running out of eyesight time. Mary

    1. there are contraindications and potential side effects for this new treatment as there are for all medications. Your doctor knows your medical history and should discuss possible risks with you prior to treatment. If he doesn’t , don’t hesitate to ask questions. I am excited for those of you that are candidates for this new treatment. Please keep us posted. Regards. Sharon Moore Patient leader

  2. my doctor mentioned this to me at my last visit. She said I'm not at the stage at the moment where I would qualify for it. She did mention that the incidence of people progressing to wet macular degeneration was greater than usual in the study group. It didn't sound as though this would be enough for her not to want to use it. This is just the way it came over to me. Wendy, Patient Leader.
