Preventing Macular Degeneration: Key Habits to Protect Your Vision

Macular degeneration, especially age-related (AMD), is a major cause of vision loss in older adults. While there's no cure, lifestyle changes may reduce risk and slow progression.
Key steps include:

Healthy Diet: Foods high in antioxidants, vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, and zinc, like leafy greens and fish, can support eye health.

Exercise: Regular activity improves cardiovascular health, benefiting vision.

Avoid Smoking: Smoking is a top risk factor for AMD.

Routine Eye Exams: Early detection allows for more effective treatment.

Manage Blood Pressure and Cholesterol: This protects the eye's blood vessels.

These habits can help people protect their vision as they age.

  1. thank you for sharing how lifestyle changes can help slow progression of macular degeneration. Most doctors do little to educate people about the benefits of lifestyle changes. Do you have macular degeneration? Warm regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

    1. I don't have macular degeneration myself, I believe educating others on the importance of proactive habits can go a long way in maintaining eye health.

  2. My wife of 86 years old has received injections 3-4 years. She now with hallucinations, confusion, sleeping more often. Reading tells me some medicines can lead to the symptoms my wife is having. Has anyone being treated suffering with the same symptoms?

    1. it is a shame to hear that this is happening to your wife. Some community members have been seeing hallucinations associated with their loss of vision. Some have been diagnosed with Charles Bonnet Syndrome and I will post a link to information on this condition. There are many other possible causes as you would be aware and only a doctor could give a medical diagnosis. How is your wife's sight? Does she have much loss of vision? Kind regards, Wendy, Patient Leader.
