Laser Treatment for Wet AMD

Has anyone had laser treatment for their wet macular degeneration? Why did your doctor recommend this treatment? Has the treatment helped your sight? Are you pleased you had it, or did it cause any problems? Would you share your personal experience? Asking for a Community member who is facing this decision. Wendy, Advocate.

  1. When I inquired, my doctor said "there are no surgical solutions". I mentioned Photodynamic "Visudyne" Therapy and I have yet to hear from him. He said that the injections are the only treatment available at present. I am at the beginning stage in one eye have had only four injections and should probably wait for some combination of anti-VEGF shots to work anyway. The question is, how soon/late is too soon/late for Laser Therapy? What should I think about a provider who does not recognize surgical options?

    1. I can only give you my personal opinion, because I'm not a medical professional. From my reading, any form of lazer treatment for wet macular degeneration is suitable only for a very few people with very specific forms of wet amd. It isn't a generalised treatment that can be offered to everyone. It can cause some problems of its own. I'm sure you've already researched this, but you might find this article useful https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/treatment-tests-and-therapies/laser-photocoagulation-for-agerelated-macular-degeneration. Best wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.
