Geographic Atrophy

I believe this is associated with dry amd. Can someone tell me the effect it has on one's sight...thanks.

  1. yes, geographic atrophy is the advanced form of dry macular degeneration. Everyone is a bit different, and your doctor can explain fully, but the symptoms can include grey area or blank area in central vision and/or distortion of vision. Some of these exist in earlier stages of macular degeneration and your doctor can tell the stage from the photos he takes of your eyes. Hope this helps. Wendy, Patient Leader.

    1. Thank you. I did a search to get more info - the effect sounds very similar to wet -- a damaged macula. Distortions etc. I have wet - legally blind now - other eye early dry. There must be subtle differences which I will discuss with my RS...

    2. I have wet (and dry) in one eye and dry in the other. It's difficult to know what's causing what! Did you have injections in your wet eye? Wendy, Patient Leader.

  2. Wet AND dry in one eye? Wow. I didn't know that was possible. Dry early a few years ago and still early. I have recently learned of wet in one eye - yes, I have had 2 injections so far. Dr. says my eye is responding well to the Eyelea --
I am very old so I guess it is to be expected - 85 - but I don't have most of the
attendant threats to cause it. No high blood pressure - no family history - no obesity -- slightly elevated cholesterol - really just age.
So, had I died 5 years ago, I would not have AMD but I also would not have my beautiful garden that continues to flourish, my new good freind whom I do love and the eastern sunrise I see each morning -- I still have all of those things.

    1. that's a lovely comment, very positive! I've just had three or so shots of Eylea too. Working very well my doctor says. My RS told me that most wet amd starts off as dry, whether we notice it or not. The dry may continue to progress even while the wet is being treated. I wish you well with everything in life. Warmly. Wendy, Patient Leader.

  3. Thanks for your nice reaction to my post. You say you have had 3 or so - will you be kept on the 1x monthly? I thought after the initial load of 3, time was stretched a bit. As in every 5 or 7 weeks ...
I asked my doc about the EyeleaHD and he said it's too long to go between injections for some people. I do understand that. Must stay on top of this vicious disease. Stay well...

    1. yes, I thought he was going to stretch the break after three shots, especially as he was so happy, but he gave me the fourth one and said to now come back in 6 weeks. I'm pleased about that. I plan to ask about the Eylea HD but not just yet. Wendy, Patient Leader.

  4. 6 weeks sounds good to me. Congrats...😀

    1. thank you. It's a good start. Wendy, Patient Leader.
