Genetic Links for AMD

I am wondering why, if there can be genetic components for AMD, we are not tested for genetic markers when diagnosed with wet AMD? It seems all patients are shoved into the same protocols and no attention is paid to fine-tuning actual causative factors.

  1. That is a great question for your retinal specialist. I am not sure knowing the causative factors would have any impact on treatment. Hopefully some other community members may have raised this question with their doctor and chime in with information. Warm wishes, Sharon Moore Patient Leader

    1. - It can be frustrating having a chronic condition for which there is no cure but they are learning more every day. There are many unknowns, forcing professionals to use what little I formation they have and then offer available treatment options. I am hopeful that as they learn more, we will begin to see more varied treatments. At this point, it doesn’t seem like knowing causative factors would change anything but that may change as they learn more. Linda Hoopes, Team Member

      1. Knowing that you carry genes for macular degeneration in no way helps guide treatment. It may, however, help your children and grandchildren. I guess? If they knew they carried two genes for an incurable disease...well, perhaps it might be incentive to live an active lifestyle and follow a plant based diet? I have myopic macular degeneration. My son (24 years old) is also highly myopic. He did 23 and me and his genetic testing came back showing he has two genes for age-related MD! He has such a great attitude. He said "well I figured I would have it since you do and Grandma (his GM on the other side) has age-related MD. I encouraged him to stay at a healthy weight and follow a plant-based diet as much as possible.

        1. both of my parents had macular degeneration, so I'm pretty sure it would be in my genes. I'm always offering to buy my grandsons sunglasses, because they don't see the necessity to wear them. I'll keep trying. Best wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.
