Dry AMD

I am new to the forum. I have DRY AMD and have read many of the postings, all mainly saying that it is important that you see a retinal professional to see if your Dry AMD is progressing etc.

I am from the UK and I don't know any one who has managed to see a retinal professional . I have asked many times to be referred to a retinal professional only to be told there isn't one.

I can only assume that all the postings where they get decent treatment are from other countries.

  1. welcome to our community. Here in the USA, I think most of us do see retinal specialist. I do know some, especially those with early stage dry macular degeneration, see their ophthalmologist for checkups. Some receive injections for wet macular degeneration. How often are you checked by your doctor? I encourage you to stay active in this community. We do have some members from the UK active in the community. I hope someone will respond to your post. 1. I was interested to read your question, because things are similar here in Australia. We do not talk of Retinal Specialists. To be honest, I didn't even know there was such a thing as a Retinal Specialist before I became involved with this Community, even though both of my parents had macular degenereation. What I think happens here, and it might be the same in the UK, is that most eye specialists are titled as Opthalmologists. They can then go on to do further study in retinal issues and often go overseas (to the UK and the US) and do Fellowships at major hospitals, once again in retinal issues. In Australia, these doctors tend to come back and work at practices that have "Retinal Clinic" or something similar in their name. If you click on the link to "Our Doctors" on their websites you'll find that they have done the further studies and had the further experience mentioned above. I found my specialist through word of mouth, but all of the above applies to him. He also is involved in many clinical trials for macular degeneration, and sometimes does podcasts for the peak macular disease foundation in Australia. I hope this helps you for your search for someone experienced and qualified in retinal issues. Best wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.
