Driving with Macular Degeneration

Driving with macular degeneration can be very challenging, and often something to plan for in the future as the condition progresses. What are some tips for someone who may think it's time to stop driving?

  1. I'll give this a shot. Some do’s and don'ts:
Do-have at least 20/40 vision in one eye. This is a law in most states.
Do-consider using Google Maps or some other audio aid to announce turns and directions.
Do-consider alternate means of transportation like friends, family, Uber or Lyft, public transportation like a bus or can.
Don't-drive at night if this has become difficult for you.
Don't-miss eye exams and make sure your optometrist sees you regularly. And your optho and RS as well.
Don't- despair! You are not alone. Many members of this site and our community have walked this path and are willing to help and advise you. Best, Richard-Advocate

    1. This is wonderful! Thank you for sharing this helpful list with our community! I'm confident it will help those looking for some more support with this. All my best, Abby (team member).

  2. I’m still driving but knowing when to stop and how that occurs was top of mind. What I’ve discovered is that I have set my own boundaries before my RS even suggested them, such as curtailing night driving. I also ask others to drive if venturing to unfamiliar routes where I need to read street signs or addresses. When it feels uncomfortable or unsafe, I stop. I was also told that when my vision is 20/70, I can no longer drive & my name will be turned into the state (Indiana). What are the driving restrictions in other states? Please share!
