Cataract surgery with dry MD

I have dry MD and my acuity is slowly getting worse. I was told by my retinal specialist that the cataract surgery may help somewhat. Could you please share yur thoughts on this

thank you

  1. I had cataract surgery 7 years ago. I was unaware I had AMD until months after the surgery. The doctor noted it in my chart but didn’t bother telling me. Here is an article that may be helpful https://maculardegeneration.net/clinical/cataract-surgery/

  2. Sharon, I wanted to ask if you felt cataract surgery was an improvement or had you wished to not have gone through with it? I have AMD in both eyes and according to Doc Brown have responded very well to the injections. I told him I was not seeing clearly and that is when I was informed I also had cataracts. It is almost like looking thru a mild sand storm. I also have astigmatism's in both eyes. I have heard the cons about the procedure, but no pro's...the most significant one being the aurora from lights bouncing around inside the eye. I would love to hear your viewpoint.

    1. I believe cataract surgery is helpful once it starts impacting your vision as your has. Mine were not very bad so I wish I had waited longer. It certainly brightens your vision. It did help with that glare from headlights. I am still very light sensitive. I have a friend having cataract removal tomorrow by laser. She says this is supposed to correct the astigmatism also. Medicare won’t pay for all of it. She will pay $1200 copay for each eye. I would just make sure you have a good surgeon and understand all the options. Mine didn’t tell me I had any choices about the lenses. Good luck with your decision. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

  3. Thanks for the information...while helpful it leaves me even more confused. I have been told that folks with AMD cannot tolerate laser removal and Medicare not covering the entire procedure. I have been putting this off for over a year and I may keep doing so until I get answers on the issues you mentioned.

    1. my friend does not have macular degeneration. I am sorry for the confusion. I had tradition cataract surgery and it was fully covered. I hope your doctor can fully answer all your questions. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader
