Are there different types of Macular? Visual differences?

As a Red discussions, it seems that I am hearing there are different kinds of macular, with different symptoms. I am not “losing” my vision. Oh, when I look at things, sometimes they disappear, or look like they’re wavy.

  1. to me personally the symptoms of dry and wet macular degeneration overlap. I have little blank spots in both eyes (one wet and one dry.) If I look at my phone keypad with each eye separately, there are one or two missing numbers with each eye. Using the eyes together, it looks OK. My left eye has dry macular degeneration, and I have a "bump" in my vision. When I look at a straight line with that eye only, I see the bump, but luckily it is not in the direct line of vision, but off to the right. With my wet right eye, I don't see a bump, or wiggle, just a few tiny missing spots. Because there is underlying dry macular degeneraiton in each eye, it is difficult to say whether the wet or dry causes a particular sympton. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Wendy, Patient Leader.

    1. Thanks. Its really comforting to hear others experiences. Even if there are differences it seems to normalize what I’m experiencing. I have wet in both eyes. I can no longer drive and I’m finding ways to compensate. It would have been helpful to at least be AWARE of possible issues. I hallucinate. The first time it happened I thought I was having a psychotic break. I was relieved to find out that while it’s somewhat rare I’m not losing my mind. I’m actually enjoying awakening sometimes to see a sweet fluffy cat on my nightstand…..until it disappears. Again, thanks for the feedback!

      1. some of our Community with vision loss, who see some hallucinations, have been diagnosed with Charles Bonnet Syndrome. Have you read their stories? Wendy, Patient Leader.
