Wet AMD and Cataracts

I have wet amd and also cataracts. I believe the doctor said it would not help much. Does anyone have any ideas? I also get shots. I am legally blind.

  1. you certainly do have a lot to cope with, having wet amd and cataracts and being legally blind. This is a very difficult question for anyone to answer because the degree of macular degeneration and the size of the cataracts is different for everyone who has this problem. It is a medical question that can really only be answered by your doctor. Did the doctor say you might see more light, even if your vision isn't improved. I'm attaching a link to an article written by our Editorial Team on this subject. I hope it helps you. Best wishes, Wendy, Advocate. htps://maculardegeneration.net/clinical/cataract-surgery

    1. Thank you

      1. you're welcome. It's good to have you in the community. Wendy, Advocate.

    2. I had been getting injections every 6 weeks for 2 years and my world was getting dimmer and dimmer. I thought it was from the amd. As it turned out the injections exacerbated my cataracts and my RS didn’t even realize how much it hindered my sight. Had cataract surgery and my whole world brightened. I changed RS and do not even wear glasses now(except sunglasses)

      1. Thank you for sharing your very positive outcome from cataract surgery. You are so fortunate not having to wear glasses. Do you feel the cataract surgery had any impact on the macular degeneration? Best wishes, Sharon Moore Advocate

    3. No, not really but my capsular bag had a small tear in it when the surgery was done and my new lens had to be placed in a different spot due to the sack being compromised. I have read that this happens more frequently with amd injection patients. However I do not think that the surgery impacted my amd. Same frequency of injections. Also, looking forward to reading how people do with the new Faricimab. I’m hoping to be able to treat and extend

      1. thanks for mentioning the drug Faricimab which has just been approved by the FDA for use with wet age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema. With this drug, they aim to be able to spread out the injections further, as you've probably heard. Did your retinal specialist mention it to you? Best wishes, Wendy, Advocate.
