A larger monitor screen

Good Morning 🌞
I'm writing to help my 86 year old mother who was diagnosed with macular degeneration about five years ago. She's doing pretty good.

She likes to go on the desktop computer to read her emails and do a little shopping.

My question is... I know I can make the lettering larger, but if I buy her a bigger monitor will the lettering be larger? Is there settings that makes the reading more comfortable for someone with her condition.

I'll appreciate any advice you can give me.

Thank you,
Scott

  1. a larger monitor will be a big improvement for your mom. Look under accessibility features which will vary among brands of PC’s. There may be options to improve contrast ans well ans enlarge the text Apple products allow you to invert background colors and make the text bold. Kudos to you for helping your mom continue to use a computer. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

    1. Thanks a million. My mom is the best.

      1. another thing to check for your Mother is the brightness settings. With macular degeneration we need enought brightness to read the screen, but not enough for the glare to feel painful to our eyes. It would be good if she knew how to change it easily. Night mode is something you could investigate if she uses the computer after dark. Best wishes to you and your Mother. Wendy, Patient Leader.

    2. Will do. Thanks again.

      1. I am 79, but have dealt with marginal vision since birth. For the past 6-8 years, have been limited to daylight driving, etc. Am legally blind in the right eye and at about 20-50 in the left. I use dual monitors, both 27", AND kick the resolution up (or down??!!) to 1600 X 900 AND kick the "Scale and layout" to 125%. Yes, I have to scroll around to see a whole page frequently, but at least I can read it easily!! The computer is a GREAT help with my limited vision.

        1. I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties with your eyes, but this answer has some great tips. Dual monitors sound like a wonderful idea. Can you read each line going right across the two screens? That would give a lot more scrolling room. Wendy, Patient Leader.
