What are some tips for avoiding falls?

Vision loss can lead to falls. Lack of depth perception and blurry vision are factors making us more prone to falls. A recent fall left me with a T12 vertebrae fracture. It is a painful and debilitating injury I don’t want to repeat. What steps do you take to avoid falling?

  1. Perhaps place neon orange tape on the edge of steps, remove progressive lens glasses when going downstairs, wear "Battle Vision" glasses outdoors (place over your prescription glasses) that makes everything clearer and brighter. They can be found on Amazon with free Prime shipping @ $19.98 for two pairs. @

    1. thank you for your tips. I will definitely check out those battle vision glasses. Do you have wet or dry AMD? Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

  2. I have intermediate stage dry amd

    1. I stayed at the intermediate stage for several years. Unfortunately mine progressed to GA. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

  3. hello all! I am interested in getting those glasses! Thanks for passing that along. Has anyone gotten any type of vision training, that is, something covered by insurance for those with low vision - how to navigate around the house and what to watch out for when out of doors - how to cope with the whole situation? I have bilateral GA, Charles Bonnet syndrome (optical hallucinations), severe osteoporosis (have had two non-fall related compression fractures, bilateral labyrinthine dysfunction and diabetic neuropathy. I am 74 and terrified about falling. Thanks

    1. I am glad you shared your experience with GA & Charles Bonnet Syndrome. I have GA and osteoporosis. I recently learned I had a compression fracture. I had a bad fall and have been several months trying to recover from my injuries. Outdoors I like using trekking poles. However since my fall alone on a walk I am afraid to get away from help. I try to walk on my treadmill. I know some in the community have accessed services to help them function with low vision. I am too far away from a city where they are offered. There should be a state agency for the blind you can contact. Warm regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

  4. Reading your description of your issues is making me feel less sorry for myself. Hang in there !

    1. reading the experience of others makes me know I am not alone. Others know just how I am feeling having gone through it themselves. I am sure appreciates your encouragement. Warm regards, Sharon Moore patient leader
