Recently Diagnosed - AMD Both Eyes

I am an artist who was recently diagnosed with AMD in both eyes. Right now my vision is good but I have been very anxious since I got the diagnosis. I am finding it very difficult and constantly feel an overwhelming sense of dread. I am happy to have found this site and look forward to reading how people are coping.

  1. welcome to our site! We're sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but we are glad to have you in our Community. We have a number of artists amongst us. I'm sharing a link here to some lifestyle changes you can consider. https://maculardegeneration.net/lifestyle-changes/ You have probably had a discussion with your doctor about AREDS2 supplements and using an Amsler Grid between appointments. If you would like information on those we can send you further links. Once you've got the basics sorted out, you can concentrate on your art, hopefully with suggestions and tips from our Community. Warm wishes, Wendy, Advocate.

    1. Thank you for your response. I am religiously taking AREDS2 and cooking lots of kale and Swiss chard along with fruits and vegetables. My anxiety ebbs and flows which I suppose is normal. Hoping I’m doing the Amsler grid correctly. I do large abstract paintings so I haven’t experienced too much difficulty when I’m working except the lighting can be bothersome. Thank you so much for responding.

      1. with the Amsler Grid use good lighting, wear your reading glasses if you have them, completely cover one eye at a time, and look only at the centre dot. Here's a link for you. https://www.aao.org/eye-health/tips-prevention/facts-about-amsler-grid-daily-vision-test. The idea is to note where you see distortion now, if any, and tell your doctor if anything changes. I hope this helps. Best wishes, Wendy, Advocate.

    2. Thank you for the website! It was oh so helpful. I really appreciate this forum.
