Has anyone had a vitrectomy?

Due to a recent experience with a large floater, my doctor recommended I get a vitrectomy. Since it really doesn't obstruct my vision, I made the decision to wait on getting the surgery. I just wondered if anyone in our community had experienced a vitrectomy and what they thought about it.

  1. my doctor is recommending a vitrectomy for me for floaters. I decided I would only have it as a last resort. My husband had one and the recovery was difficult. My doctor says it isn’t that difficult now. This link explains the procedure https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/wellness-and-prevention/vitrectomy. Warmly, Sharon Moore patient leader

    1. Thank you, Sharon! A vitrectomy seems to be pretty invasive for a floater that isn't obstructing my vision, and it's in the wet AMD eye that already has a macular scar. Apparently, I also have cysts in my eyes, so that could be another reason for her recommendation. I will wait and see what she says at my next appointment. I'm with you. Unless there is a retinal tear, macular hole or something else that will adversely affect my vision, I will wait on getting the surgery. Thanks for your support! Marti Walker

    2. I am scheduled for a vitrectomy in about 3 weeks. I have wet AMD, plus I got an infection about 9 months ago. The infection has left me with many floaters some large and some small that are interfering with my vision. My retina specialist, who I have the utmost faith in, is recommending the surgery. I am very nervous about it, but he tells me it’s nothing worse than cataract surgery, which I had a while ago.

      1. I know it’s a difficult decision. I hope all goes well. Keep us posted. Regards , Sharon Moore patient leader

    3. During the previous 24 months, I've been in contact with The Cleveland Clinic Cole Eye Institute, The Mayo Clinic and multiple Regional Retinal Specialist. Of the dozen MD's, only (1) one recommended surgery for 'Floaters.' Later, his associates declined recommending surgery. Seek multiple consultations.

      1. thanks for weighing in on the subject of surgery for floaters. My doctor recommend it for me. I will only as a last resort. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader
