Dealing with social situations

A Community Member is wondering how others deal with the social limitations of impaired vision when interacting with people you already know. If you turn down a social situation (or a volunteer job) because you don't feel your sight is good enough, do you explain the reason or just say "no thanks"? If you confuse someone you know with someone else, do you explain to them what happened? We would love to hear how you deal with this. Wendy, Advocate.

  1. this is already happening to me. I am an amiable chap but have GA (geographic atrophy) in one eye with 20/400 vision (legally blind). My other wet AMD eye tests at 20/40 usually. I walk my dog 2 miles every morning. I know all my neighbors but when they pass us on the road in their cars, I have no clue who they are? So I just wave to pretty much everyone. My close friends and family know my condition, so most social contacts are not an issue. In an unfamiliar setting my wonderful wife acts as my “wingman” and I get along just fine. Cheers! 1. thanks for responding. Waving to all cars is a good strategy! I'm glad you get along just fine. Wendy, Advocate.
