Causes of MD

I listened to a video that said it has been discovered that Demodex mites are causing dry eye MD. Has anyone heard anything about it? My boyfriend has dry eye MD in both eyes.

  1. i knew that mites can cause or worsen chronic dry eye. I have not heard anything related to them causing macular degeneration. I found an article on how demodex mites affects the eyes you might find helpf. https://iovs.arvojournals.org/article.aspx?articleid=2185995. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

    1. Sharon: Fascinating. Those little things have probably been living with us for centuries if not thousands of years. Reading the article I found no suggestion that their presence had anyting to do with macular degeneration. And it specifically addressed an Asian population as being more susceptible because of the shape of their faces. Protruding eyebrowns seem to help non-Asians. Think I'll go wash my eyelids and eat my leafy greens. Thanks for finding this.

      1. I think this MD may be meibomian gland dysfunction? This causes dry eye. The MD in this forum is macular degeneration,a retinal problem.

        1. I believe you are correct. I have both dry macular degeneration and meibomian gland dysfunction causing chronic dry eyes. Those the 2 conditions have some similar symptoms they are distinctly different. Thanks for joining the conversation. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader
