Burning pain after shot.

After my first shot, I had very bad burning in that eye for 8 to 10 hours. I told the doc on my second shot and, after the shot, he put in a dab of Erythromycin Ophth. Ointment 3.5 GM...and WALLAH! just like magic...no burning. Thank God. I had my 3rd shot yesterday and same thing. In fact he gave me an Rx for the ointment so I could have it at home. So even before your first shot ask the Doc if he/she will use a dab of ointment after the shot to avoid the burning (which was like rubbing a Jalapeno pepper in your eye).

  1. Thanks for sharing your experience using prescription erythromycin ophth ointment to stop the burning you had after the first injection. Many people feel it is the betadine used to prep the eye that causes all the irritation. Did they rinse your eye before applying the ointment? Warm wishes, Sharon Moore Patient Leader

    1. No, he just immediately "plopped" it in.

      1. That's very interesting. I could have used some of that yesterday. I had burning as never before. I got the shot in the morning and by the time I took a nap and awoke, I was going out of my mind with pain as if someone poured hydrochloric acid in my eye. The office was by then closed and I almost called 911. The morning of the injection, I asked for extra numbing drops and I think the tech over did it. He put drop after drop, waited and repeated the drops several times. The needle did hurt less but I suspect the tissue was damaged by the all the numbing drops because the treated eye is still extremely fuzzy 24 hours later and usually it is clear after a day. Despite the beginning of wet MD my acuity in the affected eye is pretty good however today I seriously fear permanent damage has been done. Pain has never driven me to tears but yesterday I moaned, howled and thrashed about like a madman. My poor little dog didn't know what to think. Ultimately I found a sample Lidocaine Gel 3.5% that they gave me at our first session. It stung worse than acid but temporarily relieved the pain so that I could skip dinner and go straight to bed. For the entire week prior to yesterday I had been making arrangements (with both parties) to obtain a "second opinion". I had every intention of staying with my present provider if told to do so. I hope this was not intended to be a send-off gift. By the way, I am allergic to oral erythromycin. Is it the same chemically?

        1. I am so sorry you went through all that. I do hope no permanent damage results from all those numbing drops. Your local pharmacist is the expert on medications. They can tell you if the medication for the eye is appropriate given your allergy to the oral form. The pharmacist could also tell you if there is an alternative to erythromycin . This information would be helpful when you discuss it with your doctor. Do keep us posted on how it works out for you. Regards, Sharon Moore patient leader

      2. I am SO sorry you went thru that pain. I know what it feels like. I was determined to find an answer or not have any more shots. Next visit I told the doc so. Hence the erythromycin gel. I don't know if they are the same or not. You'll have to ask. But there are other eye gels and erythromycin is just an antibiotic. Please let me know...let us all know...what you came up with. Wishing you the best of luck and Happiest Holidays.
