Balance issues

I was diagnosed with Myopic Macular Degeneration a few years ago and have been very fortunate that it has not progressed much. However over the past couple of years my balance has been negatively affected and I often use a cane now to keep from stumbling around. Has anyone else experienced this? My GP sent me to Physical Therapy because he thought I needed to work on strength training but that did not make any difference. My muscles are strong but because there are no straight lines in my world now, my ability to walk without assistance has been severely compromised. I'm not complaining, just wondering if any of you have experienced this. I consider myself very fortunate because I can still walk, I can drive, read, and my brain has made adjustments so that I only see black-holes when using one eye. Thank you.

  1. I had severe balance issues and suffered a series of falls. I asked for physical therapy and we worked on strengthening and balance. I do exercise standing on a balance pad. My therapist had me close my eyes to demonstrate how our vision is important to our balance. I am much improved after PT but I can’t walk a straight line. It embarrasses me when I am walking in social settings. Tai Chi is often recommended to help with balance. Thank you for sharing your story. I feel it will resonate with others in the comments.
