My Wet Macular Degeneration Story

I am 75 yrs old and have wet macular degeneration. I always had issues with lightning bolts and floaters in my eyes. My eyes have always been sensitive to light. I have one blue eye and one green eye and I was told that’s why I am sensitive to light.

I had been seeing a retinologist and getting laser treatments for tears in what I thought was my “bad eye” before COVID-19. When COVID-19 started, my doctor's office shut down so for about 6 months I did not see him. One morning I woke up and something weird happened to my left eye “the good eye”. I saw lights going around in circles, my lense was zooming in and out and then my sight went away for about 4 minutes.

I called my doctor and was told to come in. The doctor told me it most likely was an ocular migraine but he saw another problem that need immediate attention. He sent me to a retinal surgeon. That was when I found out I had wet macular in both eyes. I have been going for shots of Avastin since July 2020. I go every 6 weeks and only now I am considered stabilized.

I tried the vitamins but they make me nauseous. One of my eyes reacts badly to the shots. It’s more painful and burning afterward. I think I might have a sensitivity to the betadine and have asked the doctor to see if he could use something else. When I recover from the shots, I have about 2 to 3 weeks of being able to see, but my vision degrades again. So it seems I have no choice but to go every 6 weeks. I am a cancer survivor and my surgery left me a diabetic. My eyes do much better when I keep my sugar under control.

If anyone has any ideas as to vision aids I would appreciate it. I have purchased magnifiers that no longer help me.
