My AMD Journey

I was diagnosed with Wet AMD in both eyes 4 yrs ago. I had never heard of it. I was about 73 at the time.

Reaction to betadine

I started injections in both eyes. I quickly learned that I had a severe reaction to betadine. The post injection pain was excruciating. No matter how much they rinsed my eyes afterward it did not diminish the pain.

My retina specialist did not use the one alternative that existed, chlorhexidine. I was already taking the recommended AREDs supplement and eating green vegetables.

Dealing with comorbidities

What to do? The nearest retina specialist that used the alternative was about 200 miles way. I take care of my disabled wife so this was an obstacle which proved daunting. I was also dealing w diabetes, insulin dependent, hypertension, heart issues, and AFIB. Some of which was attributed to my exposure to Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. I served in Thailand in 67/68 while in the Air Force.

Medication and supplement side effects

I digress. I used supplements I found after doing some research and I looked at all my prescriptions, looking for any of them which could be exacerbating my condition. I was on a blood thinner due to my AFIB. I stopped taking it. The downside was my GP pointed out that you may stop the leaking and bleeding but you are now susceptible to blood clots. I chose to stop the blood thinner. I could not deal with the post injection pain.

Anxious but staying hopeful

I have not needed an injection in 2 years. So, to be honest, I do not know if I stabilized due to injections, supplements or stopping the blood thinner. I still see my RT Specialist every 4 months. One is coming up in 2 weeks. A bit anxious about every appt with the retina doctor, but so far so good.

I am taking a risk, so please if any of you are in a similar situation please consult your doctor before making any decisions about your prescriptions. Just wanted to add I enjoy this site. It is a comfort to realize I am not alone on this journey. Stay safe.
