It Just Got Worse

I had suffered from cataracts for several years and suffered from decreasing vision. I finally had both cataracts removed.

Not hold the result, in fact, my vision was still blurred. Waited several months hoping my vision would improve. It did not!!

After more checks, it was discovered that I had AMD!

This happened quite recently and I am struggling to come to terms with this situation.

<inline-mention username="Anthony.Carrone" user-id="3110676"/> I read a recent article that said cataracts can “hide” macular degeneration. I believe that is what happened in my case. The ophthalmologist that removed my cataracts told me he saw no sign of macular degeneration before surgery. It was a few months after surgery that my blurred vision resulted in a diagnosis of early dry AMD. Your story is a bit like mine, but when I went for my "cataract assessment", the ophthalmologist gave me a OCT scan which showed I had wet macular disease. From there, (this was in October 2022), I was urgently referred for eye injections, my cataract surgery being put on hold. I was having monthly injections until yesterday, when I had cataract op. The surgeon explained that, although cataract surgery is straight forward, he could not predict the outcome as I had AMD. Today, I can read some with my bad eye, whereas it had been just blackness with peripheral vision before! My next injection will be in a week's time. I know AMD is unpredictable, but I am thankful for my treatment so far.

I have to have mine done soon, and I have dry AMD. How are you feeling today after the operation? Wendy, Patient Leader.
